WHY TRAILER HARDWARE MATTERS
Trailer hardware is responsible for connecting, supporting, retaining, locking, and controlling many of the trailer’s moving components. A worn hinge can allow a door or gate to sag. TRAILER DOOR CAM LOCKS & BAR LOCKS
Cam-action bar locks are commonly used on enclosed trailer barn doors, cargo doors, truck bodies, compartments, and toolboxes. A typical cam-lock system uses a vertical steel tube with rotating lugs at the top and bottom. When the handle is closed, the lugs engage matching keepers mounted to the trailer door frame and pull the door securely into position.
Deer Valley Trailer carries complete cam-lock assemblies in several lengths, along with replacement handles, hasps, top and bottom lugs, keepers, guides, and build-your-own cam-lock components.
Complete kits and individual parts are not always interchangeable between manufacturers. Tube diameter, overall length, lug design, keeper shape, handle placement, and mounting-hole spacing should all be compared before selecting a replacement.
Most trailer cam-lock systems are described as using cams, keepers, handles, supports, and locking hasps for trailer doors, toolboxes, and compartment doors.
COMPLETE CAM-ACTION BAR LOCKS
Complete bar-lock assemblies are useful when the original tube, handle, lugs, and supports are severely damaged, missing, corroded, or no longer serviceable. Some assemblies are manufactured in fixed lengths, while others can be cut or assembled to match a particular door.
Before choosing a replacement, verify the door height, tube diameter, handle position, keeper locations, hinge orientation, and available mounting space.
CAM LOCK KEEPERS & LUGS
The keepers are mounted to the trailer body or door frame and receive the rotating lugs attached to the ends of the cam-lock tube. Worn, bent, loose, or mismatched keepers can prevent the door from pulling closed correctly.
Top and bottom lugs may be different from one another, and parts from separate cam-lock systems may use different shapes or dimensions. Whenever possible, compare the original lug and keeper together rather than replacing one part based only on appearance.
CAM LOCK HASPS
The hasp secures the cam-lock handle in the closed position and may provide a location for a padlock. Replacement hasps vary by width, mounting-hole spacing, handle design, and material.
A hasp should hold the handle securely without forcing the cam-lock tube out of alignment or placing unnecessary stress on the door.
TRAILER DOOR LATCHES
Trailer door latches are available in many designs for side doors, barn doors, toolboxes, cabinets, access panels, landscape gates, and storage compartments. The correct latch depends on the door thickness, cutout dimensions, mounting style, closing direction, security requirements, and whether inside access is needed.

PADDLE LATCHES
Paddle latches use a recessed or surface-mounted handle that releases a cam, rod, or single-point locking mechanism. They are commonly found on trailer side doors, toolboxes, cabinets, service bodies, and storage compartments.
Replacement paddle latches must match the door cutout, mounting-hole pattern, panel thickness, latch direction, cam dimensions, and locking configuration. Some designs use a direct single-point latch, while others connect to rods for multi-point locking.

RV-STYLE ENTRY DOOR LATCHES
RV-style entry latches combine an exterior handle, interior release, latch bolt, and often a separate deadbolt in one assembly. They are commonly used on enclosed trailer side doors, RV doors, horse trailers, and specialty cargo trailers.
Replacement requires matching the door cutout, door thickness, hinge orientation, striker position, lock configuration, and inside-release design. A latch that looks similar may not fit the existing opening or engage the striker correctly.
SPRING-LOADED LATCHES
Spring-loaded latches use a retractable pin or plunger to secure trailer gates, ramps, doors, side panels, and equipment compartments. They are available in different pin diameters, usable lengths, handle styles, mounting tubes, and weld-on or bolt-on configurations.
Some spring latches can be locked in the open position for easier gate operation, while others automatically return to the closed position. Deer Valley Trailer offers spring-loaded latch designs for trailer doors, panels, compartments, and stake bodies.
J-HOOK & GATE LATCHES
J-hook latches are commonly used to secure landscape gates, utility-trailer ramps, fold-down sides, and other trailer panels. The hook engages a pin, bracket, or frame member to hold the gate closed.
When replacing a gate latch, verify the hook size, pin diameter, reach, mounting-tube dimensions, gate thickness, and direction of operation.
STAKE-SIDE LATCHES
Stake-side latches secure removable or folding trailer side panels. Straight and corner configurations are available depending on where the panel meets the trailer frame.
Because these latches often work as matched sets, replacing only one component may require comparing it with the remaining latch, panel bracket, and trailer-side mounting point.
TRAILER DOOR HANDLES & HOLDBACKS
Handles and door holdbacks make trailer doors, ramps, lids, and compartments easier and safer to operate. Grab handles provide a secure handhold, while hook-and-keeper assemblies hold doors open and reduce the chance of uncontrolled movement caused by wind or trailer position.

GRAB HANDLES
Grab handles are commonly installed near trailer doors, ramps, steps, and access points. The handle should be attached to a structurally supported section of the trailer using appropriate fasteners or welding procedures.
A handle mounted only to thin aluminum skin, plywood, or unsupported sheet metal may loosen or pull free when used.
DOOR HOLDBACKS
Door holdbacks use a hook, keeper, rubber catch, magnet, or mechanical arm to retain the door in an open position. The replacement must provide enough reach and movement for the door while avoiding interference with lights, trim, hinges, or the trailer body.
A holdback is intended to control the open door; it should not be expected to correct worn hinges, a twisted door, or a damaged frame.
TRAILER HINGES
Trailer hinges support doors, ramps, lids, gates, tilt decks, and access panels while allowing controlled movement. Hinge selection depends on the component’s weight, width, operating angle, material, mounting method, frequency of use, and direction of loading.

STRAP HINGES
Strap hinges use a long flat leaf to distribute the door or gate load across a larger mounting area. They are commonly used on enclosed trailer barn doors, side doors, utility gates, and large access panels.
Replacement strap hinges should be matched by overall length, leaf width, offset, pin diameter, mounting style, material, and door orientation.
BULLET & BARREL HINGES
Bullet and barrel hinges are compact weld-on hinges commonly used on trailer gates, ramps, lids, compartments, and fabricated steel doors. Many include bushings, hardened pins, or grease fittings to reduce wear during repeated movement.
The hinge diameter, overall length, pin size, material, and intended load must be appropriate for the application. Multiple hinges should be aligned accurately to prevent binding and uneven loading.
CONTINUOUS & PIANO HINGES
Continuous hinges extend along a large portion of the door, lid, or ramp and distribute the load over a longer area. They are commonly used on ramp extensions, compartment lids, horse trailer doors, toolboxes, and enclosed trailer panels.
RAMP-DOOR & TILT HINGES
Ramp and tilt hinges are designed for heavily loaded moving structures such as equipment-trailer ramps, enclosed trailer ramp doors, and hydraulic or gravity tilt decks. These hinges can be subject to substantial weight, leverage, shock loading, and repeated movement.
Replacement should match the original dimensions, material thickness, hinge-pin size, mounting orientation, grease-fitting location, and intended trailer design. A general-purpose door hinge should not be substituted for a structural ramp or tilt hinge.
HINGE PINS & BUSHINGS
Hinge pins and bushings act as the pivoting surfaces inside many trailer hinges. Worn pins or bushings can create excessive play, door sag, misalignment, noise, and uneven loading.
Replacing only the pin may not correct the problem if the hinge barrel or mounting structure has become elongated, cracked, or distorted.
TRAILER PINS & RETAINERS
Pins are used throughout trailers to secure couplers, ramps, gates, jacks, drop legs, receivers, hydraulic cylinders, adjustable components, and removable accessories. Deer Valley Trailer carries pins in numerous diameters, usable lengths, materials, and retaining styles.
The correct pin should fit the hole without excessive movement and must be strong enough for the forces applied to the connection.
SAFETY & SNAP PINS
Safety pins and snapper pins use an attached wire or spring retainer to help prevent the pin from working loose. They are commonly used on coupler latches, jack brackets, removable gates, folding components, and adjustable trailer hardware.
Replacement pins should be matched by shaft diameter, usable length, overall length, and retainer clearance.
LINCH PINS
Linch pins use a hinged retaining ring and are frequently used on agricultural trailers, removable ramps, equipment pins, and other quick-release connections.
The pin diameter and usable length must match the hole and component thickness. A loose or undersized pin can allow excessive movement and accelerate wear.
HITCH & RECEIVER PINS
Hitch pins secure ball mounts and accessories inside receiver tubes. Common receiver applications use 1/2-inch or 5/8-inch pins, but the required diameter and usable length depend on the receiver and accessory.
The pin must pass completely through both receiver walls and the inserted component, with enough clearance for the retaining clip to engage properly.
CLEVIS PINS & COTTER PINS
Clevis pins create pivoting or removable connections and are commonly retained using cotter pins, hairpins, or clips. They may be used on hydraulic cylinders, ramps, linkage systems, jacks, and custom fabricated equipment.
The pin diameter, grip length, material, hole position, and retainer must all match the application.
RAMP-DOOR SPRINGS & GATE SPRINGS
Springs are used on trailer ramps, gates, doors, latches, and tilt components to assist movement, maintain tension, or return hardware to a particular position. Deer Valley Trailer stocks several replacement torsion springs and related ramp-door components in different wire diameters, coil counts, shaft sizes, leg directions, and configurations.
Trailer door and ramp springs can store substantial energy. They should not be selected or installed by appearance alone, and installation may require professional tools and experience.
LEFT-HAND & RIGHT-HAND TORSION SPRINGS
Torsion springs may be manufactured for left-hand or right-hand winding. The correct direction depends on the shaft location, door orientation, and the direction the spring must apply force.
Installing the wrong winding direction can prevent the system from operating correctly and may create a hazardous condition.
MATCHING A REPLACEMENT SPRING
Helpful measurements include the wire diameter, inside coil diameter, number of coils, overall body length, leg length, leg angle, shaft diameter, and winding direction. The original spring and complete door or ramp configuration should be evaluated whenever possible.

Trailer fasteners include bolts, screws, nuts, washers, and retaining hardware used to assemble or repair trailer floors, doors, hinges, couplers, lights, brackets, body panels, suspension components, and accessories.

A fastener that physically fits a hole is not automatically correct. Strength grade, thread pitch, grip length, head style, corrosion protection, locking method, and joint design must all be considered.

FASTENER GRADES & CORROSION PROTECTION
Trailer hardware is exposed to vibration, moisture, dirt, road chemicals, impacts, and repeated loading. Selecting the proper material and protective finish can improve reliability and service life.
Common trailer fasteners may use zinc plating, yellow-zinc plating, black phosphate, plain steel, stainless steel, aluminum, or other coatings and materials.
GRADE 5 VS. GRADE 8 FASTENERS
Grade 5 and Grade 8 fasteners have different strength, hardness, and ductility characteristics. A higher grade is not automatically the correct solution for every connection.
Note that increasing bolt strength can reduce ductility and introduce other considerations, so the cause of a failure and the joint design should be evaluated before changing grades.
Replacement fasteners should match the specifications required by the trailer, component, or equipment manufacturer whenever those specifications are available.
ZINC-PLATED HARDWARE
Zinc plating provides a protective finish commonly used on trailer latches, hinges, pins, bolts, and other hardware. It offers useful corrosion resistance for many general trailer applications but can eventually deteriorate when exposed to moisture, salt, chemicals, or damaged coating surfaces.
STAINLESS-STEEL HARDWARE
Stainless-steel hardware is often selected for improved corrosion resistance in marine, exterior, and appearance-sensitive applications. Stainless steel is not automatically stronger than graded carbon-steel hardware, and the material grade, thread design, joint requirements, and risk of galling should be considered.
RAW OR PLAIN-STEEL HARDWARE
Plain-steel hinges, latches, brackets, and fabrication hardware are commonly designed to be welded, painted, powder coated, or otherwise protected after installation. Leaving raw steel unprotected can lead to rapid surface corrosion.
HOW TO IDENTIFY THE CORRECT TRAILER HARDWARE
Trailer hardware can be difficult to identify because similar-looking components may differ in only one critical measurement. The most reliable approach is to compare the complete original part and record all mounting and operating dimensions.

DEER VALLEY TRAILER EXPERT TIP
One of the most common mistakes we see is replacing trailer hardware with a component that looks similar but does not match the original dimensions or strength requirements. A hinge with the wrong offset can misalign a door. A pin that is too small can allow damaging movement. A bolt with the correct diameter but the wrong thread pitch or grade can damage the connection or fail to provide the required clamping force.
Whenever possible, bring the original component to Deer Valley Trailer. If the part cannot be removed, provide clear photographs with a tape measure showing the overall dimensions, mounting-hole spacing, pin diameter, and surrounding trailer structure.
