Selecting the correct trailer hub involves more than matching the axle capacity or wheel bearings. Every hub is manufactured with a specific wheel bolt pattern and wheel stud size that must match your trailer wheels. Installing a hub with the incorrect bolt pattern or wheel studs can prevent the wheels from mounting properly and may compromise safe towing performance. Understanding these specifications is one of the most important steps when replacing a trailer hub or brake drum.

WHAT IS A TRAILER BOLT PATTERN?

A trailer wheel bolt pattern identifies both the number of wheel studs and the diameter of the bolt circle they are arranged on. For example, a 5 on 4.5 bolt pattern uses five wheel studs positioned on a 4.5-inch bolt circle, while an 8 on 6.5 bolt pattern uses eight wheel studs positioned on a 6.5-inch bolt circle. Matching the correct bolt pattern ensures your wheels fit properly and seat securely against the hub.

HOW TO MEASURE A TRAILER
WHEEL BOLT PATTERN

Measuring your trailer's wheel bolt pattern is one of the most important steps when identifying a replacement hub, brake drum, or trailer wheel. The measuring method depends on whether your hub uses an even number of wheel studs or an odd number of wheel studs.

MEASURING 4, 6, OR 8-LUG BOLT PATTERNS

Trailer hubs with an even number of wheel studs are the easiest to measure. Simply measure from the center of one wheel stud directly across the hub to the center of the wheel stud opposite it. This measurement represents the diameter of the bolt circle.

For example:

  • 4 studs measured at 4 inches = 4 on 4

  • 6 studs measured at 5.5 inches = 6 on 5.5

  • 8 studs measured at 6.5 inches = 8 on 6.5

MEASURING 5-LUG BOLT PATTERNS

Five-lug trailer hubs are measured differently because there is no wheel stud directly opposite the starting point. To measure a 5-lug bolt pattern, place your tape measure on the outside edge of any wheel stud. Then, moving clockwise or counterclockwise, skip the second wheel stud and measure to the center of the third wheel stud.

This measurement determines the bolt circle diameter.

For example:

  • Approximately 4½ inches = 5 on 4.5

  • 5 inches = 5 on 5

  • 5½ inches = 5 on 5.5

TRAILER HUB WHEEL STUD DIAMETER DIFFERENCES

Wheel studs secure the wheel to the hub using matching lug nuts. In addition to the bolt pattern, every hub uses a specific wheel stud diameter and thread size that must match the lug nuts designed for that hub. Proper wheel stud engagement is critical for maintaining wheel retention, achieving the correct clamping force, and ensuring safe towing performance.

STANDARD & HEAVY-DUTY TRAILER WHEEL STUDS

As trailer capacities increase, wheel studs become larger and stronger to safely support heavier loads.

 

Many standard trailer hubs commonly use 1/2-inch wheel studs, like 5,200 lb, 6,000 lb, and 7,000 lb trailer axles, but heavy duty 7000 lb  and 8000 lb hubs use 9/16-inch wheel studs.

 

Larger commercial and heavy-duty trailer axles may utilize 5/8-inch wheel studs, depending on the axle manufacturer and intended application.

Using the proper wheel stud diameter and matching lug nuts is essential for maintaining the trailer's designed load capacity and ensuring dependable wheel retention during operation.

LUG NUT COMPATIBILITY

Wheel studs and lug nuts are engineered to function as a matched system. Thread size, seat style, and overall dimensions must all be compatible with both the hub and the trailer wheel. Reusing damaged lug nuts or installing the incorrect thread size can damage the wheel studs, prevent proper torque, and increase the risk of wheel damage.
